The street was jam packed with cars on both sides leading up to her friends place and we stopped in front of a familiar house. It was Tade’s house. I asked Amaka,’Is this where we’re going?’ getting apprehensive …..and she said yes……you know Tade and his wife don’t you?.....Yes but I don’t know why it had not clicked or why I did not ask who your friend was because Tade had sent me an invite at the office and I had given some lame excuse why I could not be there. ‘I hope there is no problem Shade?’ ‘No, I said ……Amaka. I had this feeling of dread come over me as we walked into the venue. Music was playing from a live band and there were two huge canopies.
The caterers were on the left and I could see costumed waiters busy serving. We made our way to greet Tunde and Eniola. Aaaaa Shade…..so you decided to come…..Eniola said before Tade could even say hello. ‘I said yes, I decided to come with Amaka’. ‘Thank's, Tade replied, we really appreciate that’. ‘How have you been he asked?’ Good….good….I said. Amaka and Enoila had gone off to greet some friends and I told Tade to excuse me that I was really pressed. He said , ok….why don’t you use the loo in the guest chalet. We are not opening up the one in the main house today unless you would rather use that one?’’No….thats ok…..i’ll go there.
No sign of Kunle…….I heaved a sigh of relief. I knew the chalet so I opened the front door and turned to my right. As I made my way silently down the corridor, I heard voices……one was slightly raised and the other seemed much calmer……now where did I know that voice from?.......my heart was beating….even before it dawned on me…….Kunle…….it was Kunle……..who was he talking to?.......the other female voice said……..I’ve had enough…….I’m telling Babara……….and Segun……….they need to know……I’m tired of all this deceit. You know who Mide is…….I can’t look at his innocent face one more day knowing this secret I’ve been hiding………I can’t Kunle……if you won’t I will……..That was Cynthia’s voice……if I was right………I wanted to retrace my steps and run but something held me there. I opened the first door in front of me and went in there as they both came out of the room they were in.
This is neither the place nor the time Cynthia. You’ve said that for eight years Kunle…….thats enough for me. I was peeping through the slit in the door and could barely see the back of Kunle’s head. He made a move as if to place his hand on Cynthia’s own. Calm down Cynthia. We’ll tell them but in due time. You know Babara just lost her mum. That’s just another ploy to save you time Kunle. I’m sick of this……she must have knocked his hand off because she pulled the door open and I heard her heels clicking off into the distance.
